Based on the Grimm fairy tale, Snow White is probably the best family film ever to deal, in mythic terms, with the psychological foundation for growing up. One of the brightest nuggets from Disney's golden age, this 1937 film is almost dizzying in its meticulous construction of an enchanted world, with scores of major and minor characters (including fauna and fowl), each with a distinct identity. When the wicked queen's poisoned apple turns from killer green to rose red, the effect of knowing something so beautiful can be so terrible is absolutely elemental, so pure it forces one to surrender to the horror of it. Disney is so obsessed with Hannah Montana and High School Musical, they're forgetting about us "Boomers" who grew up on "The Wonderful World of Disney". A Halloween classic like "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" should not be cast aside. I want to show it to my grandchildren and it's nowhere to be found! This classic version narrated by Bing Crosby never goes out of style. PLEASE BRING IT BACK!
This is my favorite video, I love it! I watch it over and over- not just at Halloween. A lot of the narration is quoted from the book. It has been a very long overdue to release this remarkable movie in DVD. A great film and very moving performance by Joanne Woodward (among her best performances along with her work in Sybil). This is a very touching movie. The performances are very good. Paul Newman as a director is a natural. Great to see James Olson in any movie. Paul Newman debuted as a director with this movie and it shows. Everything is done so carefully and meticulously that there is hardly any room for anyone to breathe. But at the same time there are some things that work very well - especially the flashbacks, some only a few seconds in lengh.
